OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/07/08 -- The Canadian Football League (CFL) and football fans will pay tribute to Canada's Veterans during the two Grey Cup playoff games in Winnipeg and Regina on November 8.

The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today that Community Engagement Partnership funding will be provided to the CFL for commemorative initiatives during the East and West semi-final playoffs, to be held during Veterans' Week. The football games will feature pre-game tributes to honour the sacrifices and achievements of Veterans. The audience will participate in a short ceremony that will include a Minute of Silence in respect for the men and women who served.

"We are proud to join with the CFL to pay tribute to our nation's truest heroes, the men and women who have always been here for Canada," said Minister Thompson. "By participating in these playoff games during Veterans' Week, Canadians in the stands and those watching on television across the country will be taking the time to reflect on the importance of remembrance in our everyday lives and the recognition we owe our Veterans and men and women in uniform."

"Our league proudly remembers Canada's Veterans and is grateful to the Department of Veterans Affairs for this opportunity to formally reflect on their service and sacrifice," said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon. "We share a unique bond rooted in a common history. The 1942, 1943 and 1944 Grey Cups were won by service teams. And many Canadian football heroes have displayed their courage on the field of battle. But most of all, we feel what all Canadians should feel: a deep appreciation of our freedoms, and undying gratitude to those who fought so valiantly, and gave so much, to protect them."

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. The CFL will receive funding toward the production of commemorative initiatives including video and broadcast elements and the placement of special commemorative markings on both football fields and the helmet of each CFL player.

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund is administered by Veterans Affairs Canada. Contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
