WASHINGTON, DC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 04/09/08 -- As we approach Earth Day 2008 (April 22),Ted Turner spoke at the National Restaurant Association today about waysrestaurateurs can adopt more practices to protect the planet.As part of a national program called 'The Green Restaurant Revolution,'Turner is visiting several cities this year to meet with restaurateursabout the impact the restaurant business has on the environment and whatthe industry can be doing to be greener.
During Turner's visit to the NRA, he and George McKerrow Jr., CEO andco-founder of Ted's Montana Grill with Turner, shared 10 easy waysrestaurant operators can be more environmentally friendly:
1. Recycle as much paper, glass, plastic, aluminum and cardboard as possible.2. Install and maintain energy-efficient equipment.3. Replace standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent, linear fluorescent or LED lighting.4. Inspect kitchen and restroom faucets to repair leaks.5. Eliminate the use of all plastic straws. If you replace them, replace with paper straws.6. Eliminate plastic water and soda bottles.7. Consider new options for takeout packaging, such as corn starch to-go cups, takeaway utensils made from potato starch, and recyclable paperboard takeout containers.8. Use all recycled paper in your restaurant.9. In kitchens and restrooms, install low-flow water valves where possible.10. Use non-toxic cleaning and chemical products.
Turner appears in New York City tomorrow to meet with more than 150restaurant and hospitality representatives, as well as hospitalitymanagement students from New York University's Steinhardt School ofCulture, Education, and Human Development.
