CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 08/18/08 -- The National Council of State Boards ofNursing, Inc. (NCSBN®), www.ncsbn.org, inducted its second group ofFellows of the NCSBN Regulatory Excellence Institute on Aug. 6, 2008,during the NCSBN Annual Meeting and Delegate Assembly held in Nashville,Tennessee. The Institute of Regulatory Excellence (IRE) began in 2004 withthe purpose of providing boards of nursing with high quality regulatoryeducation, expanding the body of knowledge related to regulation throughresearch and scholarly work, developing the capacity of regulators tobecome expert leaders, and developing a network of regulators whocollaborate to improve regulatory practices and outcomes. The IRE is aseries of educational conferences held annually with the following topicsrotated on a four-year cycle: Public Protection/Role Development of NursingRegulators, Discipline, Competency and Evaluation/Remediation Strategies,and Organizational Structure/Behavior.
The IRE Fellowship Program is a four-year comprehensive educational andprofessional development program designed for current or former regulatorswho want to enhance their knowledge of and leadership in nursingregulation. The program includes experiences in analyzing issues involvingpublic policy and regulation, strategic planning, patient safety andcommunication. It also requires the application of evidence-based conceptsin decision making and leadership.
Individuals who complete the Fellowship Program requirements are called aFellow of the NCSBN Regulatory Excellence Institute (FRE) and are entitledto use the initials FRE after their name in recognition of theiraccomplishment.

Linda Young, MS, RN, FRE, nursing practice specialist, South Dakota Boardof Nursing
