Keynote Presentations
James McLurkin, MIT roboticist, inventor, researcher and teacher, willpresent the opening keynote entitled, "Engineering Creativity: Exercisesfor the Right Brain," on Tuesday, June 10 from 9-10 AM. As a child, JamesMcLurkin was building with LEGO(TM) bricks, cardboard boxes, or any othermaterials he could access and he continues this tradition today. UsingMother Nature as a model, his core research is developing algorithms andtechniques for constructing and programming large swarms of autonomousrobots. Inspired by the behavior of ants and bees, his SwarmBots performindividual tasks that collectively contribute to the goals of the group. In this presentation, McLurkin will discuss the logistics of creativity, his sources of inspiration, and how to structure your environment toenhance creative thought.
The keynote panel entitled, "Innovation at a Crossroads" will take place onWednesday, June 11 from 9-10 AM. The panel will examine the pros and consof product innovation and platform innovation. The panelists will debateboth sides of the scenarios and share their experiences on how business andinnovative breakthroughs really happen. The panel will be moderated byJohn Hanks, Vice President of Measurement and Control, NationalInstruments. Panelists include: Nathaniel M. Sims, MD, Physician Advisorand MIT Innovation Lab Member, Partners HealthCare Biomedical Engineeringat Massachusetts General Hospital; Audley Brown, Director of AdvancedPropulsion System Controls, Powertrain Division at General MotorsCorporation; Jon Fredrickson, Director of Innovation Expansion,InnoCentive.com; and Patricia Seybold, Author of "Outside Innovation,"Founder and CEO of Patricia Seybold Group.
