MUNICH, GERMANY -- (Marketwire) -- 09/29/08 --

Optical demarcation capability enables service providers to deliver differentiated, intelligent optical services

Norcross, Georgia, USA and Martinsried/Munich, Germany.September 29, 2008. ADVA Optical Networking today introducedOptojack®, a new technology that enables the establishment ofintelligent optical demarcation points to monitor advanced opticalservices. Optojack provides optical demarcation and servicemonitoring at the handoff point between carrier networks, as well asat the demarcation point between the carrier and customer network.Optojack is designed to enable remote Operations, Administration andMaintenance (OAM) of key optical network elements in the access andbackhaul portions of the network.

Analogous to ADVA Optical Network's successful Etherjack® technology,Optojack provides the ability to monitor and test wavelength-basedservices, a missing service provider requirement today. Frequently, providers deliver optical services to customer locations without anyvisibility into the health or status of the delivered traffic. Inaddition, during turn-up or test, there is no way to perform theloopbacks and remote testing from which most other non-opticalservices benefit. Without a clear demarcation point that delineatesone carrier's network from the next, or the carrier network from thecustomer's, it is challenging for the provider to cost-effectivelymonitor, manage and troubleshoot an optical service.

With Optojack in place, a service provider can monitor the opticalsignal all the way to the access equipment (e.g., a DSLAM (DigitalSubscriber Line Access Multiplexer) at the curb or in a building) orcustomer device (e.g., Local Area Network (LAN) router). It can alsobe more certain of the quality of service provided across multiplecarrier regions. Using Optojack functionality, carriers gainimportant knowledge about when optical service degradations oroutages take place and, in some cases, can identify service problemsbefore the customer is aware they exist. Importantly, problems can befixed before they cause a complete outage, contributing to thedelivery of higher service availability levels.

"Due to the competitive nature of our industry, intelligence aboutthe network and the service can be a service provider's secretweapon," commented Dr. Christoph Glingener, chief technology officer(CTO) of ADVA Optical Networking. "Optojack is an invaluable tool tohelp carriers offer differentiated services to a demanding customerbase. No matter the underlying protocol, Optojack enables loopbacksand other key performance monitoring techniques that provide insightinto network services. This can lead to higher profit levels at atime when carrier budgets are squeezed from every direction."

Optojack is a Small Formfactor Pluggable- (SFP) transceiver-basedsolution, which is compliant with the MSA (SFP MultiSource Agreement)and can be integrated into any SFP-based equipment, including ADVAOptical Networking's flagship FSP 3000 and FSP 150 solutions. Othernetwork devices, like Optical Network Units (ONUs) that provide thelink to the customer premise, can also utilize the SFP, enablingOptojack to play a critical role in successfully managing the entireaccess portion of the network. In addition, a specific loopbackoption enables the Optojack functionality to interoperate with anydevice using standard-based SFPs.

To complete the solution, Optojack technology can be managed remotelywith ADVA Optical Networking's FSP Network Manager (NM) to provide atotal test and monitoring solution from the core or regional networkall the way out to the optical demarcation point. This integratedsolution enables delivery of intelligent optical services instead of"best-effort" unmonitored services.
