AUGUSTA, ME -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 07/01/08 -- Brent Boyles, President and CEO of Maine PublicService Company (AMEX: MAM) (MPS), and Sara Burns, President of CentralMaine Power Company (CMP), today announced plans to construct a 345kilovolt (345 kV) transmission line from central Maine to NorthernAroostook County.The Maine Power Connection (MPC), a joint project of MPS and CMP, willconnect Northern Maine to the CMP and New England electric grid to provideMPS customers with access to competitive electric power markets and tosupport the development of proposed wind generation projects in AroostookCounty. Presently, MPS does not have a connection to the New England gridor adequate capacity to handle burgeoning requests for transmissionconnections from wind developers.
Brent Boyles said, "We plan to invest between $400 and $500 million tobuild a 200 mile 345 kV transmission line and related substations from theDetroit area to Northern Aroostook County. The Maine Power Connection willenable the development of wind generation projects estimated at $1.6billion, providing tremendous economic and environmental benefits toNorthern Maine and the entire region."
